Putumayo, Colombia
Gran Tierra Energy is the largest producer, reserve holder and exploration landholder in the Putumayo Basin of southern Colombia. We have a 100% working interest in
two significant, recent discoveries in the Basin, the Costayaco and Moqueta fields.
The science is represented by the tools, techniques and engineering processes we use to find reservoirs and develop fields.
The art is represented by the external factors, our relationships with people, how we care for the environment, and how we operate within the Company itself. We need a lot of creativity to combine all of these elements and make them work to run the business.
The project that best exemplified the “Art” of oil and gas operations last year was the facilities grade upgrade we did at Costayaco. That, which itself was an engineering project, was completed using a large quantity of local labour, but as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, we worked with the cooperation of the local people who benefitted from our many CSR programs, including an award-winning crop substitution program for the benefit and security of local farmers.
CONTINUECostayaco’s main challenge for this year was to increase water injection rates to the desired and planned levels for the Caballos reservoir, and we reached this goal by upgrading the surface facilities. For Moqueta, the challenge was to continue appraising the field without road access, utilizing only helicopters. We have continued to see strong results with the drilled wells. These activities gave us the information to continue planning the full development and we have yet to define the edge of the limits part of the structure. This is the first roadless field development ever accomplished in Colombia.
Gran Tierra Energy needed to adapt to a growing production profile while facing pipeline outages. As part of the overall year on year growth strategy we thought about transportation for all the volumes and alternate routes for transport. The contingency plan proved effective in providing stability and growth for our operations.
We’ve also had much involvement from the local communities. The communities in all our areas of influence have become very active both with respect to ongoing dialogue and actual participation on our projects.
In 2014 and 2015, we’re very excited about the diversified exploration portfolio beyond our strong operational capabilities in the Putumayo basin. We remain focused on drilling exploration wells in frontier basins, where Gran Tierra Energy is a pioneer, and building on our track record of success in the Colombian oil industry.
